Pioneer Village
The next morning, Sebas woke me up and informed me that we had arrived at the settlement.
From a distance, the village appeared to be enclosed with logs, and there were watchtowers at each end of the village.
At the entrance to the village, there was a wooden gate with knights standing guard on both sides of the gate.
At a glance, it looked more like a small fort than a village.
Once inside the gate, there were several one-story wooden houses. There were some two-story buildings here and there, but they were generally all one-story.
In the center of the village, we were greeted by a small, hunched-backed, bearded old man with the appearance of a village chief and a muscular man in an Adventurer's Guild uniform.
While the village chief, guild officials, Bear-san, and the deputy knight commander talked for a while, the adventurers quickly got off their wagons and headed toward the east gate.
Apparently, the camp for adventurers and knights had been built outside the village on the east side of the village, near the [Demon Forest].
It would be convenient for them to go exploring there, or to protect the village in the event of an attack.
Sebas and I stayed here and waited until the chief and the others finished talking.
After the conversation, Bear-san and the deputy knight commander headed to the east camp. Then, we exchanged greetings with the village chief.
"It's been a long time, Rodda-dono. This is Light-sama, the youngest son of the Baron."
Sebas tactfully introduced me.
"I am Light. I am here today to be of service to you as a healer mage. I look forward to working with you."
When I said that, the village chief was surprised but introduced himself.
"I sincerely apologize for this. My name is Rodda, and I am the chief of this pioneer village. Pleased to meet you."
Then, the Adventurer's Guild employee who was standing behind him greeted me.
"I'm Berg, and I'm in charge of the Adventurer's Guild branch in this village. I look forward to working with you."
After I had introduced myself, the village chief asked me timidly.
"It seems you came here as a healer mage… but is that only to support the adventurers?"
"No, that includes everyone in the village. Even if anyone in the village gets hurt, I will heal them."
Hearing this, the village chief felt a little relieved and asked me for a favor.
"I think it's unreasonable to make a request like this, but if possible, would you be able to cast [Recovery Magic] on those who are injured or sick right now? Opportunities like this don't come often... "
Well, of course. There are no healer mages in this territory.
"It don't mind. However, if one is sick, there are some things that cannot be cured with [Recovery Magic]. Please ask the apothecarist about that. I have the [Appraisal] skill, so please send the results of the examination to the apothecarist. I'm sure if you report it to them, they'll prescribe the medicine properly."
Saying this, I agreed to examine and treat the villagers.
From there it was quick.
Hearing my words, the village chief quickly gathered the villagers and had them line up in front of me.
Then I went about my work steadily, looking at the villagers with [God's Eye], using [Heal] on those who needed medical attention, and handing over a paper with the results of a medical examination for the apothecarist.
Generally, the only people who needed [Heal] were old people with arthritis and neuralgia......
In general, the people of the pioneer village were in good health.
By the time I finished my work, it was nearly dusk.
Sebas and I were to stay at the village chief's house instead of at the campsite.
While I was examining the villagers, the adventurers and knights immediately began exploring the forest, but the monster in question had not yet been found.
The adventurers and knights returned at the same time as my examination was over.
While having dinner at the village chief's house, I listened to the story of the pioneer village.
Apparently, the pioneer village was created around the time I was born, when the knights and adventurers built the village together with the villagers while exterminating monsters.
The villagers here were people who were farmers in other territories, people who lived in the slums of the royal capital, retired adventurers, and others who applied to develop this area.
Even now, villagers are still applying, but they are not coming in as fast as they would like, distribution is still lagging behind, development is not progressing as fast as the lord would like, and the villagers still do not have enough income to pay taxes.
Sebas was also listening intently and taking notes.
Apparently, Sebas comes several times a year to check on the progress of the pioneer village.
However, I couldn't come up with a concrete solution and was at a loss.
Well... that's right.
This village was not built as a farming village.
Farm work cannot be done safely in places where monsters frequently appear. Therefore, the only way to earn income in this pioneer village is to cut wood from the forest, collect medicinal herbs, or hunt monsters and sell the materials.
None of these activities are stable, as they are dependent on adventurers.
I feel like the Baron family could provide a little more support...
As I was thinking about this village, suddenly a voice echoed in my head......
Brother, it seems the translations you've been hosting here need a Gmail account to read. Perhaps it's out of your control due restrictions from blogspot, but I figured I'd give you another heads up.
ReplyDeleteBesides that, I seriously hope the protagonist doesn't get a permanent Fenrir companion. Seeing the titles of the next two chapters, it looks like he does. Cliches like that typically end up ruining my enjoyment of a series :I
Thanks for the update
