Chapter 24: Slime
It seems that it will take about 10 days for the requested item to be ready.
"It hurts that I gave him the leather armor."
"It was a bit unplanned."
That's why I'm here at the administration... to collect herbs.
“Ah, Shiro-san, Wince-san.”
The lady at the reception desk. We've become friends.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm in a bit of trouble."
Saying that, she shows me the request form.
It's not a wooden board, it's paper.
"Um. Subjugation of slime?"
"Slime? That's the kind of thing that bothers you?"
It's not that much of a threat.
A monster with a small nucleus in its sludgy mucus.
It's just that when it dies, it bursts open and scatters all over the place, which is a pain in the ass.
"I see. The town of Kadaza is all forest, so you don't know about it."
The place where we were asked to defeat the monster was an underground cemetery.
It seems that it is not such a large structure even if it is called a cemetery.
It is said to be a pit where unidentified or unclaimed bodies are dumped.
That's where the slime's troublesome nature came into play.
The slime eats the rotting bodies and multiplies.
When the slime is defeated, it bursts open.
They send out pieces of rotting flesh, bodily fluids, and bones, injuring guards and adventurers.
Moreover, because it's in a confined space, other slimes can also be fatally injured, causing a chain reaction of explosions.
"That's scary..."
"That's right. It's the first time I've learned that slimes are such dangerous creatures."
"Can't you two do something about it?"
"Shiro-san, can we do it?"
"We can do it, but... wouldn't it be bad if I destroyed the cemetery?"
"Do you mean to make it collapse? No way!"
"I see... do slimes burn?"
"I've never seen anyone use magic on slime, so I don't know...."
"Let's try it"
-------------
The entrance to the catacombs.
"There are so many of them."
The whole area is covered with slimes.
“No matter how many I kill, they keep dividing up. If they were outside, I would just reduce them quickly and then they would all be wiped out."
There's nothing I can do about it, so we just end up guarding the entrance.
"Can I use magic? Fire, though."
"We've already checked with the canary. There's no gas or anything."
"Then won't hesitate, fireball!"
I use magic, and behind me, the guards and Wince are talking.
"He's a swordsman, but he can use magic? He doesn't have a staff or a catalyst."
"Well, as you can see, he's a pretty special person..."
It seems that people in this world can't use magic without staff or catalysts.
There are exceptions like me, so just for reference
------
It happened when I threw a few fireballs into the hole
A series of high-pitched bursts were heard
Is it a firecracker in modern times?
Just a great shock echoes.
"That's a pretty loud sound."
"Let's check it out."
Frankly, I think I've gone too far.
"It's a hell of a scene"
There are pieces of flesh all over the place.
The earthen walls are pierced by a tremendous number of bones.
"Is it over?"
"It's not over. Some are still in the back."
"Let's withdraw."
The three of us retreated.
It's no use.
Even if I sweep them from afar with magic, there are too many of them.
-------
We started a meeting at the guard quarters.
"Even if we reduce the number, it's meaningless if it increases immediately."
“Shouldn't we try to prevent it first?”
"But how?"
“How are they multiplying in the first place?”
"How they are multiplying... come to think of it, I didn't know either."
Wince doesn't seem to know either.
"After eating a lot, the core splits into two and increases."
The guard knew.
Cell division.
In other words, slime is a single-celled organism...
"Wouldn't it dissolve if we poured lime on it or something......?"
“Lime?”
The slime mucus feels oily to the touch, isn't that fat?
No, it doesn't have to be lime. I think a strong alkaline would work.
"I'll report that to the higher-ups then. Until then, let's seal off that cemetery."
So, this problem is unsolved.
Actually, this is my first failed request.
It can't be helped.
The adventurers at the administration were betting on when we would fail.
Tftc.
